Yesterday we hosted a webinar to hear about the results of a recent research project looking at the impacts of invasive non-native species on native biodiversity. The recording will be available later today on our webinar page if you missed it.
Our daily theme
Today’s theme is ‘recording and volunteering’.
Recording
- We are asking everyone spending time outdoors to look out for alert species and record sightings of these through iRecord. Lots of resources are available to help with recording:
- ID sheets are now available for all alert species
- An alert species poster
- A mini guide to common non-native species and alert species
- Our webinar today is with the National Bee Unit, on yellow-legged hornet, an alert species. Find out more and register to join.
- The British Beekeepers’ Association is launching its new free classroom-based citizen science programme for schools: Pollinator Protectors: Monitoring the Yellow-legged Asian hornet.
Volunteering
- We’re celebrating the work of Local Action Groups with a new infographic on their work.
- On Friday, Baroness Hayman, Defra Minister for Biosecurity, Borders and Animals, visited Eden Rivers Trust, South Cumbria Rivers Trust, and West Cumbria Rivers Trust to see some of their work to protect lakes and rivers in Cumbria. Learn more about the visit on the West Cumbria Rivers Trust Facebook page.
- For safety in the hot weather, many of the volunteering events that were due to take place this week have been postponed, but we are encouraging everyone to consider joining a volunteering event later in the summer and will share new dates on our events page as they are announced!
Later this week
Our webinar series continues throughout the week:
- Weds 24 June: Marine Invasive Non-Native Species – what can we do about them? - with Natural England
- Thurs 25 June: Using citizen science to prevent future spread of invasive non-native plants - with Coventry University
- Friday 26 June:
- Bermuda's Biosecurity - with speakers from the Government of Bermuda and Bermuda National Trust.
